My sustained investigation is a physical representation depicting the downward spiral of my grandmother’s mental health and the decline of her bodily health after experiencing a stroke and becoming paralyzed. The pieces explore not only her journey through the stages of grief but the effect it had on our once close-knit relationship.

The opening pieces of my investigation delve into the strain on my relationship with my grandmother.

Pieces #2 and #3 both utilize resin techniques. Piece #2 depicts the new restraints placed upon my grandmother using hard edges and wire rapping, therefore hiding the woman that once was. While piece #3 creates movement by the use of overlapping blue tissue paper representing a shift in dynamics much like rough water. The pieces then begin to focus more upon my grandmother’s experience of the stages of grief as pieces #5, #12, and #13 embody emotions including depression, anger, and acceptance, although reluctant. The investigation completes itself with my coming to terms with the situation depicted in piece #15. The slave bracelet exhibits my understanding that the woman I once loved is forever gone; however, I am Mentally stronger as a result.

My sustained investigation centers on the emotional stages endured by teenagers while undergoing quarantine. For many, including myself, this event was the first significant life-altering situation experienced in our beginning stages of adolescence. Therefore, a multitude of new emotions presented themselves as a result of the circumstance and are displayed throughout my works.

At the beginning of my sustained investigation, I aimed to express the rapid loss of control and overwhelming changes occurring when education was administered virtually.

In pieces #1 and #4, leading lines and the strategic positioning of the figures are intended to induce anxiety. The pieces then begin to develop more complex emotions as the effects of enduring social isolation started to set in. Pieces #10, #12, and #13 utilize rhythm, proportion, and repetition simultaneously. Hence the photos emote desolation and detachment, as teenagers begin to lose touch with reality due to their separation from their peers. The closing photo of my investigation purposely leaves an open-ended feel as the leading lines of the road represent the continuation of the pandemic and problems that will continue to arise.
