LUTZ SCHERNECK
Lutz is best known for his expressive acrylic paintings made from swathes of fluid color poured and plowed across the canvas.
An early appreciation of artwork by the European Impressionists and contemporary American artists, Pollock, Rothko, Hofmann and Avery, became the foundation of his artistic development. Lutz paints with canvases stretched on the floor. He feels that it is advantageous to work from all sides and within the canvas. The edges of the work are determined after paint application is completed and then a stretcher frame is built to prepare the artwork for display.
Lutz says:
The motifs painted in my work are not abstractions of something. They are not painted to achieve a visual likeness. I am happy to let them be simply colored paint on a surface. When they do show a resemblance to the visual world they must function in the world of the painting. As every tone belongs in a symphony and is played in a manner that completes the whole, so must every motif, form color and line belong to the reality of the painted work.
The artist Alberto Giacometti said, “The object of art is not to reproduce reality, but to create a reality of the same intensity.” To clarify, the reality that
is created is the intensified reality the artist experiences. The end result may completely conceal how it began but what has resulted is a path that evolved through the process of painting. Somewhere in the process of creation the painting takes over and leads me along to its resolution. When the artist is no longer needed, the work is finished.
Lutz Scherneck holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting from Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts.
His work has been on display throughout Central New York and he has received numerous awards of recognition. A large mural of his painted in 2014 can be seen on Albany Street in Little Falls.
